Physicists plan to construct The Hive in 2014. To conceal its true nature, they are instead planing on naming it the Deep Underground Science & Engineering Lab (DUSEL), which I assume won in a close race against to the more funding-friendly alternative, Amazing Underground Lab for Super-Needed Awesome Physics (AULSNAP).

Yes, let’s teach kids to inhale (whip-its) “various aroma compounds” out of balloons. That couldn’t possibly be a bad thing.
From C&EN (Sept. 20 issue).
It’s like Magic: The Gathering for chemists (ok targeted to kids, but whatever). I like the idea.
The Elementeo Chemistry Card Game uses gaming to help kids explore the world of science! In Elementeo, element cards have their own personality and battle with each other using their properties and oxidation states – Oxygen Life Giver rusts metals, Copper Cyclops shocks element cards around him, and Helium Genie airlifts element cards in balloons. Throughout the game, players create compounds, combat with element reactions, and conquer their opponents with black holes and slippery bases.
Yea! Alternative energy getting more funding instead of cancer crap. Sorry, I’m a bit biased since part of my research is solar energy and medical funding is through the roof in comparison to other areas of science. And there’s that whole thing about estimated petroleum depletion by around 2030. Unfortunately this is just funding to private companies, but it’s a start.
The US Department of Energy (DOE) is awarding loan guarantees worth nearly $2 billion (£1.32 billion) to two solar companies, in a major push to develop alternative energy technologies.
